2009 Loaves and Fishes Graduate Inspires a Tough Audience
So Aziel started his speech off with personal details—about some troubling events he'd witnessed—to paint a picture, command the kids' attention. It worked. Gradually Aziel began talking about people who helped him steer clear of trouble: his parents, teachers and advisers at Loaves and Fishes. Before 18-year-old Aziel Faison spoke at this past school year's 'bridging' ceremony for Poe Elementary fifth graders, he knew the standard stay-in-school/out-of-trouble messages would fall flat. He told N&O writer Ruth Sheehan, who
