After-school Programs
Our approach = Academics + Enrichment
How it works:
Monday–Thursday, students arrive at Loaves and Fishes directly after school and stay through 6:30 pm. Volunteers and staff work with them in four age groups:

Each age group has its own academic and enrichment sessions:
Academics
During this time children can get one-on-one help with homework, reading, math and computer skills. They also work on assignments designed to help them become better students. (The staff contact teachers regularly to determine appropriate assignments for each student.)
Enrichment
Our enrichment activities encourage children to pursue special interests, appreciate diversity and improve social skills. During this session, they might:
- Do creative projects involving music, drama, drawing and painting, creative writing, and more.
- Play sports.
- Learn and practice social skills.
- Learn about different cultures.
- Listen to guest speakers share their talents and experience.
Beyond after-school hours, we're excited to take students on field trips whenever possible—to participate in community service projects, see cultural events and experience fun learning facilities such as the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
Older students in the Stars group also:
- Explore career and college opportunities through guest speakers, workplace visits and guided research.
- Learn practical life skills such as interviewing, budgeting and making nutritious food choices.
